Summary
Add non-English display-language support to the GitHub Copilot app, with a clear way to select the language used by the application interface.
The app currently does not support alternate UI languages. This issue consolidates existing requests for language selection and localized interfaces; it is a feature request, not a statement that localization has shipped or a commitment to a delivery date.
Why this matters
An English-only interface makes navigation, settings, permissions, and workflow decisions harder for developers who prefer another language. Multiple reports ask for a language setting or a localized version of the app, including Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, and Arabic.
Requested behavior
- Provide a discoverable display-language setting, remember the selection, and allow users to return to English.
- Localize app-owned interface text consistently across navigation, menus, settings, session controls, dialogs, notifications, and other app surfaces.
- Define how the initial display language relates to the operating-system language, and use an English fallback when a translation is unavailable.
- Support the layout and typography requirements of each offered locale. For right-to-left languages such as Arabic, include appropriate UI direction, alignment, navigation, and mixed-direction text handling.
- Preserve the content and meaning of code, commands, paths, identifiers, and user-authored text rather than translating them as interface labels.
The languages listed above reflect reported demand, not an approved launch-language list. Language prioritization and rollout can be tracked here.
Scope and boundaries
This request is about the application's display language and UI localization. It does not replace separate requests or bugs involving agent-response language preferences, multilingual voice transcription, spellchecking, input-method behavior, or programming-language support.
Consolidated reports
Existing UI-language requests will be closed as duplicates of this umbrella issue so that discussion and demand can be tracked in one place. Representative reports:
Please add language-specific needs and relevant localization details here so they remain visible during prioritization.
