How do I get rid off "Failed to fetch conversation title because of response type (badRequest) and reason (token expired or invalid: 403)". Is this causing the error "Sorry, your request failed. Please try again. Request id: 26700fe1-812b-41e3-ae70-733a46b7e9a1"?

Hi, I've had the same issue sometimes in the past, so I'll share some solutions that helped me to solve it:

1. Sign Out and Back In:
In Visual Studio Code, go to the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS).
Search for Copilot: Sign Out.
After signing out, use Copilot: Sign In to log in again. This refreshes the token.

2. Verify Your Subscription:

Ensure that your GitHub account has an active Copilot subscription. Log in to your GitHub billing page and check the status. (For me, this was not the problem, I was using the free version)

3. Clear the Cache:

Sometimes cached credentials can cause problems. Locate the GitHub Copilot extension's configuration directory and clear its cache.

4. Update Visual Studio Code and Extensions:

Check for updates to Visual Studio Code (Help > Check for Updates) and the GitHub Copilot extension to ensure compatibility.

I have tried the four possible solutions provided by @JoseLorenzana272 but unfortunately I am still not able to use GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio Code.

I also had this or a similar problem with expired token, for me the deactivation of all extensions incl. copilot chat .. helped. After deactivating the extensions, I restarted VSCode and first only activated copilot to log in again. After that everything worked again and all extensions could be activated again without there being any problems with copilot afterwards. For me, it seems that some update of an extension led to a conflict with copilot, because shortly before the problem occurred to me, a restart of an extension was necessary, which then led to the problems afterwards.

I have deactivated all extensions, like suggested by @thazalega. Unfortunately, I still get the same error message. When I activate GitHub Copilot again and I login again, I see my previous failed request again. Apparently the chat history is still available somewhere, even after deinstallation and installation of GitHub Copilot in VS Code. See also microsoft/vscode-copilot-release#2867

I tried the last point with my second IDE (Pycharm) just to make sure that it doesn't lead to a permanent lockout, which isn't the case; you're just asked to re-execute the extension authentication.

Anyone reading this - I had a similar experience with Server Error: 500 while copilot was in the middle of a task. Clicking retry wouldn't fix it (tried half a dozen times). In the end I did a reload of the developer window (CTRL-SHIFT-P, reload). That got it working again. However, it seems that when it's in this state, it will often go back to this state, and you need to reload window again. I restarted VS Code and that fixed it for good (until the next time!)

It seemed to be a temporary server-side fault of the AI service that Copilot connects to. After I connected the API to Copilot and used it for a while, the same message appeared. During that period, other software using the same AI model API also stopped working properly. After some time, they all started functioning normally again at the same time.
